Here's Part 2 of the tribute to the "Unsung Heroes" of Korea.
- 7-11 Lady - Almost everyday, at about 11 o'clock, a couple of us walk down the street to the 7-11. Note: They do not have slurpees in 7-11. Anyways, we met her on our very first day of work at Haba/Oedae. She's very polite, and always gives us chairs and straws or whatever small things we need. She makes our little breaks pleasant. Thanks 7-11 Lady!
- PC Room Man - Right next to the Dry Cleaning Couple, on the 2nd floor, there is a PC Room that we frequent to look at things on the net, apply for jobs, download music... It's all super fast, and open 24 hours a day. Korea has the fastest internet connections in the world. For about $1/hour, we can use the internet at this place, and get free soda and coffee. More times than not, the PC Room Man (who always wears a blue shirt and black pants) will give us free time on the computer, especially when we are working on something. What a nice guy!
- Angel 24 Owners - About 3 months ago, a new convenience store opened up right next to our apartment. It's called Angel 24, and was opened up by a young family. They keep adding more and more to their selections. If they add bread, we'll never go grocery shopping anywhere else! We get snacks, drinks, dinner sometimes, contact solution...they have everything!
- Photo Lab Lady - To get hardcopies of all of the neat pictures we take here, we go to the FDI Photo Lab located on the 2nd floor of the Worldcup Mall - Home to Lotte Mart (our favorite grocery store). The managers there speak English well. We've been there so many times, that they just let us come around the back and use their computers directly to choose our photos, and they always have them done in 15-20 minutes. One of the managers, an older lady (but not much older) always helps us out. She's super nice, and very knowledgable.
- The Pizza Delivery Places Who Get My Pizza Orders Right - Every 2 weeks or so, I crave a pizza. There's many pizza shops around who are willing to deliver, but it's sometimes very hard to tell them what I want. I'll ask for a Pepperoni Pizza with no vegetables in Korean of course (they put vegetables on every pizza here as part of the topping, so you have to tell them not to). They will understand me and I will still end up with a Pepperoni Pizza covered in vegetables. It's edible, but not satisfying. There are some places though who get it to me right. I thank them for not only giving me a pizza, but giving me a happy stomach.
- The Jang-An-Sung - A chinese restaurant about 10 seconds walking from our apartment. It's right at the corner, and they are willing to deliver to our place. We get the sweet and sour pork (Tong-su-yook) everytime, and we get a free pepsi and free sides. It's so delicious! The food is actually quite large, so we can make 2 meals out of it as well. Thanks Jang-An-Sung!
- Stationary Store Man - across the street from the chinese restaurant is the stationary store, filled with lots of neat things for kids, such a toys and knick-knacks. It was one of the first places we went to in Korea, and he is just super polite. We'll get stickers for our students, or candy or ice cream for us, and we even got a BB Gun from him as well. Kids can go in and buy BB Guns and fireworks at almost any toy store here, and no one seems to mind, and no one gets hurt. We really appreciate having the Stationary Store so close to our place.
- Aaron at Starfox - one of the local pubs, Starfox, as a manager who speaks perfect english. He loves having us as patrons to his pub. Good food, and nice Fruit Soju, without a lot of hassle. Many foreigners started going to his place within the past few months, and love it. Thanks for getting our orders right, and bringing food out to us fast.
That's about all of the Unsung Heroes I can think of now. There may be more later, we still have some time left in Korea.
Take care everyone!
